If you are studying in Canberra (or thinking about it), you have likely heard the term "Canberra Matrix." It sounds like a sci-fi movie, but it is actually the most important system standing between you and Permanent Residency (PR) in the ACT.

Competitors might give you a complicated calculator. At Right & Associates Canberra, we prefer to give you the strategy to win.

What is the Canberra Matrix?

Unlike the federal "Points Test" (where you need 65 points), the Canberra Matrix is a specific scoring system just for the ACT. It ranks you against other candidates. The higher your score, the more likely you are to be invited for:

  • Subclass 190 (Permanent): Live and work anywhere in Australia (after obligation).
  • Subclass 491 (Provisional): Live and work in a regional area (Canberra) for 3 years.

How to "Hack" Your Score (Legally)

Many students miss out on easy points. Here is where our clients usually gain an edge:

The "Residency" Goldmine

  • The Rule: You get points for every year you live in Canberra.
  • The Strategy: Don't move interstate! If you study a 3-year Bachelor's degree at UC or ANU and stay in Canberra, you accumulate massive points just for staying put.

The "Spouse" Advantage

  • The Rule: Your partner’s skills can boost your score.
  • The Strategy: If your spouse has "Competent English" or a valid skills assessment, you gain extra points. We often advise couples to book PTE classes together at our Canberra office to ensure both partners contribute to the Matrix score.

The "Critical Skills" List

  • Your occupation must be on the ACT Critical Skills List. This list changes often.
  • Current Trend: Roles in Nursing, IT, Engineering, and Early Childhood are heavily favored.

190 vs. 491: Which One Should You Target?

  • 190 Visa: Requires a higher Matrix score. Best for those with high English scores and long residency.
  • 491 Visa: Lower entry barrier. A fantastic option if your points are slightly lower. It leads to PR (Subclass 191) after 3 years.

Why You Need a Migration Agent for This

Self-calculating your Matrix score is risky. If you claim 70 points but can only prove 65, your invitation will be refused, and you may be barred from reapplying. Come to Right & Associates (University Ave, Canberra). We will calculate your score conservatively to ensure your invitation is safe.
